Out of the Box: Two Great Podcasts that Defy Definition

I found out a little while ago that the podcasting medium presents a challenge to ranking things by category.  That’s because you have people doing such unique, incredible work that it really can’t be categorized.  I tried to shoehorn these podcasts into my previous (now deleted) list because I desperately wanted to recommend them (and because iTunes’ recommendations had all five podcasts on the old list associated with each other), but that didn’t remotely do justice to the work these producers were doing.  So if a podcast defies categorization, why not say so?  Furthermore, I expect this list to grow, just because of all the great work I’ve seen happening in the podcast community

1. KCRW’s Here Be Monsters – Jeff Emtman, Bethany Denton, Nick White, Lina Misitzis, Bridget Burnquist, Alex Kime, Eric Molinsky, Caitlin Pierce, Lauren Stelling, Mickey Capper, Emile B. Klein, John Summerson, Shoppingspree Clark, Mario Mack, Garrett Tiedemann, Luke Eldridge

Here Be Monsters is, from what I can gather, a podcast that exists to give you an experience you won’t get anywhere else.  There have been episodes on more standard “weird” topics, like dreams (HBM 053, December 23rd, 2015), astral travel (HBM 054, January 6th, 2016) and drug trips (HBM 058, March 2nd, 2016), but Here Be Monsters has also covered topics like how a guest producers apologizes for a very specific lie told in adolescence (HBM 056, February 3rd, 2016) and the philosophy of a man who is trying to collect every copy of the movie Speed (HBM 033, May 21, 2014).  Every episode is highly candid and unfiltered, relaying these experiences directly from those who experienced them.  The inability of Here Be Monsters to be defined is the reason why it fascinates.

2. Mystery Show – Starlee Kine (Gimlet Media)

Mystery Show might not be what you expect to get when you click on a podcast called Mystery Show, but in a sense its’ the truest interpretation of that title.  Mystery Show is about the joy of the mystery.  Every episode, host Starlee Kine investigates a real unsolved occurrence.  She gives her findings to her audience, and to everyone she shares her mission with along the way, with humor, empathy, and a sense of adventure that’s impossible to ignore.  At the end of the day, it’s Kine’s charisma  that makes Mystery Show so irresistible.
